Church of San Blas

The Fugger family arrived in Almagro during the first half of the 16th century given that the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V had leased out the office of grand master of the Military Orders and granted the revenues from the mercury and silver mines of Almadén, as payment for their banking services. Upon his arrival, Jacob Függer rebuilt and restored the ancient hermitage of El Salvador in order to thank God for all they had benefited from. This building kept the name of El Salvador until the 18th century, when it became known by its current name, San Blas. The Latin inscription over the lintel of the doorway reads as follows:

“To the high Saviour, all that there is and what it is also expected to inside and outside this chapel, Jacob Fugger and the sons of his brothers hereby dedicate this chapel as proof of faith and religion. I give, devise and bequeath”.
