Convent of la Encarnación

The building has a Latin-cross layout with a polygonal chancel which underlines its Mannerism style. In the transept, there are magnificent paintings of San Juan Bautista, San Juan Evangelista, San Diego and San José, an iconography connected with its founders’ onomastic.

The nave, which is divided into two parts, is covered by a barrel vault with transverse arches and lunettes. The first part of the nave is decorated with the heraldic symbols of the Order, where it is also inscribed the year 1597. Its shallow side chapels are ornamented by Tuscan pilasters which articulate an extent of wall.

Its main entrance stands out and consists of two bodies: the first was built in the 16th century and is covered by a semi-circular arch which encloses a false alfiz; the second was built in the 18th century under the patronage of the Valdeparaíso’s Count, consequently, he donated a huge sum of money to restore the church and to build its altarpiece of the main altar, which is adorned with a fine escutcheon of the Valdeparaíso’s Counts.
