Contemporary Art Space (CAS)

The Contemporary Art Space (CAS) of Almagro was founded in January the 23th, 2005 in the former Hospital of San Juan de Dios, a building which was part of the Convent of the Order of St. John of God. The CAS of Almagro is a place that fuels ignite minds, creativity and learning. Central to this space of art is the encouragement of an ever-deeper understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art by the diverse local, national, and international audiences that it serves. In sum, the Contemporary Art Space of Almagro seeks to create a dialogue between the established and the experimental, the past and the present, in an environment that is responsive to the issues of modern and contemporary art.

The CAS is a building that belongs to the municipality, and constitutes one of the most comprehensive and panoramic views into modern art. The CAS permanent collection has grown to include over 60 works including those of Alberto García Alix, Bleda y Rosa, Albretch Tübke, Enrique Marty, GüÇlü Öztekin,  Mira Bernabeu, Rafael Agredano, Tacita Dean, among others.

In addition, the Contemporary Art Space maintains an active schedule of modern and contemporary art exhibitions, talks, lectures, and film festivals; and it offers special activities for teachers, students, preschoolers and guided tours.

The CAS of Almagro has hosted past exhibitions such as: Jacobo Castellano y Gonzalo Puch: Puzzling Question! Persona, Sueño y Realidad a contemporary art collection provided by the University of Salamanca and curated by Alberto Martín. Marina Abramovic: Siete vídeos performativos, una aproximación a su obra. Thomas Hirschhom works, like United Nations Miniature, are characterized by their engaged reflection on contemporary reality, carrying out a clear social and political criticism, and questioning the current status quo. Julio Falagán: Huye mientras puedas, and so forth.
